Turn Signals

Dear Drivers,

I would like to point out a safety device currently available on most modern cars.  While seated in the Driver’s seat, if you look to they left of your steering wheel you will notice a lever sticking out from the steering column.  The lever may perform several functions.  But, nearly universally, the lever will activate what are called the turn signals.  The execution is surprisingly simple and intuitive.  If you raise the lever up until it stops it will activate lights on the exterior of the car on the right side, both front and rear.  Similarly, if you push the lever down until it stops, it will activate lights on the left side of the car.

The purpose of these lights is to indicate to others; drivers, pedestrians, bicycles and other interested parties, that you plan on turning your car in the direction you've indicated with those lights.  While the operation of the lever is quite simple, it will require a free hand.  As a result, you will need to put down your phone, travel mug, book or eyeliner in order to effectuate the movement.

Keep in mind, the safety effectiveness of this device is directly related to its correlation to the actual direction you ultimately travel.  This, of course, requires that you know what direction you are planning to travel - which is, in most cases, problematical.  However, in the rare or accidental event you know which way you are planning to turn your vehicle prior to making that turn, employing the turn signals by use of this simple lever will allow others to anticipate your pending move.
